Zum letzten Mal sehen Anna und Otto Quangel ihren einzigen Sohn, als er 1940 einberufen wird. Kurz darauf fällt Otti "für Führer, Volk und Vaterland". Für das Ehepaar bricht eine Welt zusammen; Phrasen vom Heldentod bieten keinen Trost. Anna beginnt anonyme Feldpostkarten mit den Worten "der Führer hat mir meinen Sohn ermordet" zu verteilen. So hofft sie, die Menschen wachzurütteln. Doch vor allem setzt sie die Überwachungsmaschinerie des Nazistaates in Gang.

During World War II Anna and Otto Quangel's only son is killed in combat. For the couple, their whole world falls apart. This personal tragedy causes Anna and Otto to fight their own battle against Hitler. All over Berlin they start to distribute anonymous war post cards with inscriptions like "The Führer has killed our son". For a long time both are able to carry on with their resistance before they are finally discovered by the Nazi secret police and crushed by the machinery of a brutal totalitarism.
